From the Archives: Westover Winters 1911-1914

By Rich Beebe P'10

Snowstorms can magically transform Westover’s campus into New England postcard landscapes — and also into winter playgrounds for its students. That’s been true for more than a century.

Westover’s Archives collection contains a number of photo albums dating back to the first years of the School. Among the earliest ones are a series of albums assembled from 1911-1914 that document life on campus throughout the school year. These albums, prepared by professional photographers, would allow Westover students or their families to select the numbered images and place orders for copies of their own prints.

The following slide show gives a sampling of images from these albums, featuring Westover students enjoying a range of winter activities — taking sleigh rides, building snowmen and snow forts, sledding, and skating — both on the School campus and in nearby Middlebury locations.

The styles of winter clothing may have changed, as well as some of the physical features on campus and in Middlebury, but the magic and excitement of Winter at Westover still remain.
