Oxford Tutorial Model

The Oxford Tutorial Model: A Transformative Academic Initiative

The Oxford Tutorial Model, traditionally a hallmark of the educational systems at Oxford and Cambridge, emphasizes personalized learning through small-group and one-on-one instruction. This model has been adapted to fit our model of a women-centered boarding and day school for secondary students while preparing them similarly to the most rigorous institutions in the world. We provide an enriching academic experience that fosters independent study and faculty-student relationships.

Implementation at Westover

The Oxford Tutorial Model enhances students' academic experience and prepares them for success in their future endeavors. We incorporate this approach into a women-centered educational framework, so Westover can continue to lead the way in empowering young women through education.

This adaptation of the Oxford Tutorial Model creates a rich academic culture that champions a strong community of young women ready to make their mark in the world. We do this by creating an environment that prioritizes women's voices and experiences, which can help students build confidence in their abilities and foster leadership skills. Personalized feedback and mentorship from faculty can inspire students to pursue career fields traditionally underrepresented by women, such as STEM!

Key Features of The Oxford Tutorial Model

List of 5 items.

  • Personalized Attention

The heart of the tutorial model is the opportunity for students to engage directly with faculty in a supportive environment. Typically structured as one-on-one or small group sessions (often no more than three students), these tutorials allow for in-depth discussions on topics relevant to the student’s coursework and personal academic interests. This format enables educators to tailor their teaching to individual learning styles and needs.
  • Critical Thinking and Intellectual Growth

Each tutorial session encourages students to articulate their thoughts clearly, defend their viewpoints, and engage in constructive debates with peers and faculty members. This approach nurtures critical thinking skills, as students are expected to absorb, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information.
  • Flexible Learning

Unlike traditional lecture-based formats, the tutorial model allows for flexibility in teaching methods. Faculty members can adapt sessions based on students' progress and challenges, ensuring each learner receives the support necessary to thrive.
  • Collaborative Learning Environment

Group conferencing is an integral aspect of the Oxford Tutorial Model. Students can collaborate on projects, share ideas, and benefit from diverse perspectives. This fosters community and encourages peer learning, further enriching the educational experience.
  • Independence and Accountability

Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through regular tutorial preparation, which often involves writing essays or completing problem sets. This independent work cultivates self-discipline and accountability, essential skills for future academic and career pursuits.
