At Westover, service is an integral part of the school's culture and day-to-day life. This commitment shines through in the work of students like Sarah Q. ’26, whose passion for sustainability and leadership has created tangible outcomes for Westover students.
Through her involvement in Turning Green’s
Project Green Challenge, Sarah has demonstrated that service extends beyond the classroom, taking action to address environmental issues while inspiring others to do the same. Her leadership in launching Style Cycle, a community-driven swap shop promoting sustainable fashion, is a testament to her dedication to service and advocacy.
Since 2018, Science teacher Heather Nuzzo ’91 has guided her AP Environmental Science students in the Project Green Challenge (PGC), a month-long competition that empowers young people to take action for a more sustainable world. This year, Westover students made a remarkable impact, placing third out of thousands of participating schools. Sarah went even further, earning a spot in the
Top 10 on the Project Green Challenge Leaderboard and securing a place in the PGC Finals.
As a PGC Finalist, Sarah traveled to San Francisco, CA, where she collaborated with mentors, ambassadors, and partners to bring her Climate Action Project to life. Her project, Style Cycle, is rooted in community service and sustainability—creating a swap shop where students and community members can donate gently used clothing and items in exchange for something they need.
During the summit, Sarah gained valuable tools and insights to expand her project’s reach, connected with like-minded changemakers, and deepened her commitment to environmental advocacy. “Meeting the other Finalists and experiencing the summit with people who are also incredibly passionate about sustainability was an unforgettable experience,” she shared.
Her dedication to service through environmental action reflects the heart of Westover’s mission: using knowledge and leadership to make a difference. Sarah continues to refine her project on campus and will present it at the PGC Finals this spring.
Within Westover’s community, Sarah serves as Second Over Spirit Head and Varsity Squash Captain in her junior year. As an Over Spirit Head, she plays a key role in upholding traditions that have been part of Westover since its founding and stewarding new students into the life and culture on campus. Balancing leadership responsibilities with her commitment to sustainability, Sarah exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated and engaged student leader.
Sarah’s journey—marked by advocacy and an unwavering determination to create change—exemplifies the spirit of Westover. Whether leading her peers as an Over Spirit Head or championing environmental sustainability through Style Cycle, Sarah embodies Westover’s commitment to cultivating courageous, compassionate leaders who strive to make a positive impact. Her dedication to service and leadership reflects the School’s mission to inspire students to take action as confident leaders.
